Catching On

54 seconds remained on the clock. His team trailed by 6. Braylon Edwards had done this before.

He expected to make the play. Of course, the rookie did, catching Charlie Frye's lob pass for the go-ahead touchdown.

"It was just like Michigan State," proclaimed Edwards, referring to his role in Michigan's triple overtime victory over MSU last year.

OK, that's perhaps a tad on the overzealous side. Remember, this is one preseason game... against Detroit. Big deal, right? In that preseason moment, for this pitiful team, it was.

It turns out, though, there may have been one player not cheering when Braylon Edwards hauled in his touchdown against Detroit.

Deep down, Andre Davis must have known his time was up. That was clear before Edwards seized the moment. It seemed obvious, earlier in the game, after Antonio Bryant left Dre Bly in his dust for a 51 yard score.

But Davis' trade to New England Monday was less of a reflection on the former 2nd round picks' talent, and more of an affirmation of the Browns' most talented possition. This team has wide receivers who can make plays.

Not since Brennan, Slaughter, and Langhorne has a Browns team been able to boast that.

Andre Davis may thrive in New England, provided he can manage to stay injury-free. He could make the Pro Bowl, for all the Browns care. But if Braylon and Bryant play like they did Saturday night, Davis will not be missed.

Or will he? Your thoughts, as always, are encouraged. Browns fans, drop me a line at chandler@newsnet5.com
