Royal Flush: KC Holds Tribe's Wild Card
Wow. Poor Buddy Bell. His Kansas City Royals are bad. I mean really bad. Hopelessly bad. But consider their loss the Indians' very fortunate gain.
C'mon Tribe fans, admit it. You looked at the score and let your inner skeptic take control. Some Wild Card race these Indians have themselves in, right? Losing 7-2 to the Royals! Tell me, again, which team had just lost 10 straight? By the 9th Tuesday night, your baseball team was done, and so were you.
Maybe you flipped out. Maybe you flipped the channel. All you knew was this was no flippin' playoff team, losing to the Division doormat.
Well, you missed the Indians scrap their way back, run by run. And you missed Kansas City hand the Tribe an 11-run 9th inning, and the game.
"They kind of gave it to us," said Casey Blake. "Obviously, they cut their own throats. You won't see that too often, big-leaguers dropping a ball, let alone two in one inning."
Ah, but Casey, these aren't big-leaguers. You've heard the term 4-A player (he's better than triple-A, but not good enough for the Majors). The Royals are a 4-A team. Minor leaguers with big paychecks.
If only they were all against teams like the Roya.... wait, what's that? Most of them are? Folks, therein lies the whole point of this. The Indians have 19 games remaining against Kansas City and Tampa Bay (a combined 81-144). That includes 10 of their final 16 games. There are more than enough chances to stockpile wins.
The schedule maker failed to extend that favor to Oakland, L.A., or New York. The Indians and Yankees stand 4 games back of Oakland and L.A. in the Wild Card race.
They're very much in this thing. They can thank Kansas City later.
Do you agree? Or did you throw your remote when Mike Sweeney hit his homer? Let me know: chandler@wews.com
