Browns Deal Suggs

By John Chandler

The Browns finally dealt RB Lee Suggs, trading him today to the New York Jets for CB Derrick Strait. Suggs told me on Saturday that he was anticipating a trade, even though he felt as though he had the inside track on the third down back job. If anything, the finally healthy Suggs was the Browns most tradable commodity in the backfield.

The Jets have a pressing need for a running back, with veteran Curtis Martin fighting a knee injury. There is speculation that Martin, the Jets all-time leading rusher, could be contemplating retirement.

Meanwhile, the acquisition of Strait adds depth to the Browns hurting secondary (Daylon McCutcheon and Gary Baxter are expected to miss the remainer of the preseason). Strait was a third round draft pick of the Jets in 2004 (76th overall), and played in all 16 games for New York last season, with 31 tackles.

Strait's collegiate career at Oklahoma was an impressive one, earning the awards for the nation's top defensive back and top defensive player in his senior year for the Sooners.

At first blush, this deal looks like a push for either team.
