Suggs Fails Physical
By John Chandler
The Browns trade of Lee Suggs to the New York Jets for CB Derrick Strait is off. Reports out of New York confirm that Suggs failed his physical, and is headed back to Cleveland.
"In terms of trade, Lee Suggs failed his physical," said Jets coach Eric Mangini today. "It's just one of those things that happens. We had of a process in place medically to make sure that every player we bring in can be able to perform and it's pretty standard operating procedure."
Entering his fourth season, Suggs has battled injuries throughout his career with the Browns. They showcased him in Thursday night's preseason opener against Philadelphia, in hopes of enticing another team into a deal.
With this news, trading Suggs again will surely be difficult. It's no secret the Browns would love to unload him, given their current full stable of running backs, rather than keep him. And knowing he's not wanted, you have to wonder how Suggs will fit back into the fold. This is a guy who wants to play, to prove he's healthy. Now, according to at least one other NFL team on the record, he is not.
When in the lineup, Suggs has a history of effectiveness. He finished the 2004 season with three 100 yard efforts, but followed that up by missing eight games in 2005 with a host of injuries. The guy spends more time in street clothes than the average fan. Based on that, the Browns may have no choice but to bite the bullet and cut their ties without anything in return.
Will the Browns end up releasing Suggs, or should they hold onto him? That's the question, Browns fans. E-mail your thoughts to 5sports@newsnet5.com and watch for them on the Alltel Sound Off on the Toyota Sports Sunday.
