Browns Trade Droughns, Release McCutcheon

By John Chandler

The Browns continue to hustle through the offseason with a trifecta of moves on Friday. As expected, RB Reuben Droughns is out, traded to the New York Giants for WR Tim Carter. Also, the team released veteran DB Daylon McCutcheon and signed Bengals ristricted free agent DT Sean Smith to an offer sheet.

Here's the breakdown on all three:

Droughns Trade:
The departure of Droughns was expected after Thursday's arrival of RB Jamal Lewis from Baltimore. At this point in their careers they are similar players, both between-the-tackle runners who have lost a step or two. So, when the Browns put $3.5 million in the pocket of Lewis this week, it almost went without saying that they'd unload the $3 million to be owed to Droughns. That they got WR Tim Carter for him in a deal with the New York Giants is gravy.

Smith Signing:
A league source confirms the Browns signed DT Shaun Smith to a 4-year offer sheet. He is a restricted free agent, which means the Cincinnati Bengals have one week to match the Browns offer. Smith, who will turn 26 before the start of the 2007 season, is one of those undrafted-player-makes-good stories. He's a big boy (6-2, 315 lbs) who would ideally take the reigns from aging Ted Washington sooner than later at defensive tackle. That's if the Bengals let him walk.

Daylon Done:
Perhaps we all should have seen this one coming, considering the sudden string of injuries that seemed to keep Daylon McCutcheon off the field coupled with Sunday's signing of DB Kenny Wright. For the Browns to simply terminate his contract at a time when their secondary is so thin says plenty. That leaves K Phil Dawson as the lone remaining link to the 1999 expansion Browns.
