IN ACTION: OSU VS. MEMPHIS
By John Chandler
Greg Oden scores the first two of the game for Ohio State, and it sure felt by design, considering all the talk coming from the mouth of Joey Dorsey on Friday. In case you missed it, here's the cliff notes version: Dorsey called Oden overrated, predicting a 20 rebound night while referring to himself as Goliath to Oden's David. Hmm. Wonder if he realized that Goliath actually lost that matchup way back?
Dorsey's not backing down from the words in the early going, forcing Oden to fumble into a turnover in the lane.
If you ask me (not that you did) I think it's a little gamesmanship on the part of Memphis. Try to get under Oden's skin, given that the Buckeye freshman has shown a tendency to unravel in three tournament games so far. It's a bit of a gamble, trying to bait the big man into aggressive play in hopes that he picks up a few quick frustrating fouls. He could also blow up on them for 20 and 10 before they even figure out how to stop it.
15:15, 1st half: OSU 8, Memphis 2...
Attitude Aggressive
For the first time in three games this March, Ohio State has opened aggressively. In addition to feeding Oden first, David Lighty's layup off the break capped an 8-0 Buckeye run to start the game.
But Jeremy Hunt's three pulled the Tigers back into things at the 14:30 mark of the first half, 9-5. Memphis is fast, folks, and that means they can quickly get back into a flow. The Buckeyes need to continue to drop the hammer, here.
Home Court
14:00, 1st half: Oden picks up his first foul, much to the delight of the Memphis contingent right behind the Tigers' bench. The Alamodome is relatively tame today, and I hear they couldn't give tickets away outside on the Riverwalk. They, of course, being Texas A & M fans. You know the NCAA bigwigs just cringed when the Aggies fell to Memphis on Thursday. A & M faithful fled town, taking their money with them. Had the Aggies advanced, today's game would've been like a home game for them.
12:30, 1st half: while Ohio State starts to get sloppy with the basketball, Memphis takes a 10-9 lead. Careful, Buckeyes. The Tigers have found life.
