Quinn Impresses In Workout
By John Chandler
Brady Quinn gave the Browns something to think about.
The Notre Dame quarterback impressed coach Romeo Crennel, and the dozens of other pro scouts who made the trip to South Bend for his pro day workout.
Throwing to his receivers, and under the direction of his coach Charlie Weiss, Quinn completed 58 of 63 passes. He made every throw necessary, showing range and arm strength. He did not run the 40 or participate in agility drills, since he's still recovering from an aggrevated knee injury suffered in the Sugar Bowl. Quinn says he's expecting to be 100% by his next pro day workout on March 22nd.
If he did anything today, Brady slammed the brakes on his falling draft stock with a solid, if not spectacular workout. Question is, was it enough to wind up wearing Brown and Orange next fall?
From those who know, I hear Quinn's performance has the Raiders thinking twice about taking JaMarcus Russell with the first overall pick. Quinn would rather play in Cleveland than Oakland, especially since he grew up outside of Columbus, Ohio.
I'm still not sold on the idea of another rookie quarterback. Yes, the addition of Eric Steinbach on the offensive line will help whomever takes the next snap for the Browns. But really, what good is a left guard if the left tackle next to him can't hold a block?
Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas may still be the favorite pick at #3, but Brady Quinn has made everyone -- including the Browns brass -- think twice about the draft.
Problem is, that includes the Detroit Lions, who hold the #2 pick.
Browns Sign Cornerback
The Browns remained busy for a third night on the open free agent market. According to a team source, they have added cornerback Kenny Wright, formerly of the Washington Redskins.
He's an eight year veteran, and the Browns will be his fifth stop in the NFL. He started 9 games for the 'Skins in 2006, tallying 39 tackles and one interception.
Browns Nation, be sure to tune into Sports Sunday tonight at 11:35 for the latest on Brady Quinn's pro day and the Browns. We'll be joined by Browns Specialist Mary Kay Cabot, plus Gib Shanley and the Alltel SoundOff.
