2ND HALF: OSU VS. MEMPHIS
By John Chandler
A few halftime observations, while sucking down Diet Coke that's flatter than Western Ohio...
* Turnovers might be the diffence in this game. Ohio State converted 9 Tiger T-O's to 15 points in the first half.
* The three is again a factor. Memphis' firm of Hunt, Kemp, and Mack combined to hit 7 of 9 triples in the first half. And once again, Ohio State was lulled into a bomb session (2-for-9) that didn't quite go their way. Had it, we might be booking tickets for Atlanta right now.
* So far, Dozier v. Oden is a whole lot of nothing. Not that I was around for it, but I don't recall David and Goliath talking junk.
* Best sign in the building, from right behind the Memphis bench: Calling Coach Calipari: UK is on line 1! I love creative fans.
Back to Work
Greg Oden starts the second half just as he started the first, with a quick layup and a 43-38 lead. Off the turnover, a Ron Lewis two handed crush forces Calipari a quick timeout.
Oden's first half was again quiet, with a line of 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 fouls and no blocks. He played just 9 minutes, and in that time Memphis didn't penetrate much. Now, that was by design of Ohio State, who's zone defense basically begged to live or die by the three. In the first, the Tigers killed 'em.
Oden's in much more of a flow to start this second half, sinking a smooth hook on the baseline. Of course, just as I say that, he picks up foul number three. Greg, I believe coach Matta has a lovely seat on the bench reserved for you.
Bombs Away
Ron Lewis just attempted a three from the Alamo. Now, he's certainly shown the ability to make such a shot (just ask Xavier) but why the need to front-rim one, and let Jeremy Hunt come right back down and pull the Tigers within two at 49-47?
14:26, 1st Half: OSU 51, Memphis 50... Antonio Anderson's transition tally reminds us this is, in fact, a close game.
